Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) for Skilled Workers and Work Visa Holders

Comprehensive Legal Support from London’s Leading Solicitors

If you have built a life in the UK on a work visa, obtaining Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is your next step toward stability, freedom, and possibly British citizenship. At Right Law Solicitors, we help professionals, skilled workers, and sponsored employees transition from temporary status to settlement in the UK with clarity and confidence.

Our London-based immigration solicitors have successfully guided hundreds of clients through complex ILR applications under the Skilled Worker route (formerly Tier 2), Health and Care Worker visa, Global Talent visa, and other work-related categories.

What Is ILR for Work Visa Holders?

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is a form of permanent residence that allows individuals to remain in the UK without time limits or immigration restrictions. Once granted, you can work, study, and live in the UK freely — and eventually apply for British citizenship.

Who Can Apply for Work-Related ILR?

You may be eligible if you have spent the required time in the UK under one of the following visas:

  • Skilled Worker Visa / Tier 2 (General)
  • Health and Care Worker Visa
  • Global Talent Visa
  • Innovator or Sole Representative Visa
  • Senior or Specialist Worker Visa (Global Business Mobility)
  • UK Ancestry Visa
  • Scale-Up Worker Visa (subject to eligibility)

Eligibility Requirements for Work-Based ILR

  • 5 years in the UK under an eligible work category
  • Employed by a licensed sponsor (where required)
  • Meet the salary threshold (£26,200/year or £10.75/hour for most Skilled Workers)
  • Continuous lawful residence with no excessive absences
  • Pass the Life in the UK Test
  • Meet the English language requirement (B1 level or equivalent)

Special considerations:

  • Salary requirements may differ for shortage occupation roles, new entrants, or health and care workers.
  • Some Global Talent or Innovator Visa holders may be eligible after 3 years.
  • Absences and immigration history must be carefully assessed before applying.
