What Is the UK Expansion Worker Visa?
The UK Expansion Worker Visa allows senior employees of an overseas business with no existing UK presence to establish a commercial entity in the UK. It replaced the Sole Representative visa route in 2022.
Key points:
- Granted for up to 2 years (non-settlement route)
- For senior managers or executives setting up a new branch
- Allows teams of up to 5 expansion workers in certain cases
- Can later switch into long-term routes such as the Skilled Worker visa
Eligibility Criteria for Applicants
- Be aged 18 or over
- Currently employed by an overseas business with no UK trading presence
- 12+ months employment with the company (waived if earning £73,900+)
- Sponsored by a UK-licensed sponsor for an eligible role
- Hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
- Meet minimum salary requirement (£48,500+ or £23.18/hour)
Sponsor Requirements for Overseas Businesses
- Apply for and obtain a UK sponsor licence under the Expansion Worker category
- Provide detailed expansion plans (financials, staffing, growth targets)
- Demonstrate genuine need to establish a UK branch or subsidiary
- Prove parent company continues to operate overseas
- Assign a valid CoS to the nominated expansion worker(s)
