British Citizenship by Naturalisation

Comprehensive Legal Support from London’s Leading Solicitors

After years of living, working, and contributing to life in the UK, becoming a British citizen is the final and proudest step for many migrants. Through naturalisation, you can gain the full rights of citizenship, including a British passport, voting rights, and unrestricted residency.

At Right Law Solicitors, we help eligible applicants navigate the complex naturalisation process with confidence. Our expert immigration team, based in London, will assess your eligibility, prepare your application, and ensure all required documents and representations meet the Home Office’s high standards.

What Is Naturalisation?

Naturalisation is the legal process by which a non-British national becomes a British citizen. Unlike registration (which applies to certain children and other specific cases), naturalisation is the most common route for adults who have:

  • Lived in the UK for a qualifying period
  • Held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or Settled Status
  • Met the good character, residency, and language requirements

Once naturalised, you are entitled to a British passport and gain full civic rights in the UK.

Eligibility Criteria for Naturalisation

  • Must be 18 or over
  • Hold ILR or EU Settled Status for at least 12 months (unless married to a British citizen)
  • Residence: 5 years (standard) or 3 years if married to a British citizen
  • Good character: no serious criminal convictions or immigration breaches
  • English language: minimum B1 level
  • Life in the UK Test passed
  • Absences: max 450 days in 5 years (or 270 days in 3 years for spouses); 90 days in last 12 months

Key Differences for Spouses of British Citizens

If you’re married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen:

  • You only need to complete 3 years of residence
  • You can apply immediately after ILR or Settled Status — no 12-month wait
